NGOs call for “bold action” by Vietnam in alleged rhino kingpin’s trial

Nguyen Mau Chien, the suspected leader of a major criminal network that traffics rhino horn, ivory, tigers and other high-value wildlife products to Vietnam, is on trial this Friday morning, (January 26, 2018) at the Ha Dong Court in Hanoi. He has been charged with 2 crimes; transporting prohibited wildlife products and possessing prohibited wildlife products.




Numerous NGOs have joined hands to encourage Vietnam to bolster efforts in tackling soaring levels of poaching and wildlife trafficking. Chien’s arrest in April 2017 was considered a breakthrough in efforts to dismantle major wildlife crime, however, Vietnam needs to stringently enforce its commitments and deliver meaningful prison sentences to deter illegal wildlife trade.
